Your recruitment schedule is set, and your Pinterest board is officially overflowing. Now, there's just one thing left to figure out… What are you actually going to wear?.

If you're feeling a little overwhelmed by that question, take a deep breath. There's a method to the rush-week outfit madness. And in this guide, we're sharing everything you need to know about what to wear to sorority recruitment, with plenty of ideas you can make your own.

What Is the Dress Code for Sorority Recruitment?

There's no single dress code for sorority recruitment, and what's expected can vary quite a bit between schools. .

That said, most formal recruitment follows a similar progression. You'll typically start with open house, followed by philanthropy, sisterhood, preference, and finally Bid Day. Some campuses combine or rename rounds, but in general, when it comes to dress code, things tend to start casual and get a little dressier as the week goes on.

Here's the quick version:

Before we break down each round, we want to emphasize that this advice is simply a starting point, not a set of hard-and-fast rules. Recruitment is all about understanding the vibe of the day and the sorority, and then finding something that works for you within that context.

And if your campus gives you specific guidance, always follow that over anything you see on TikTok, Pinterest, or even in this guide!

What to Wear Each Day of Sorority Recruitment

Got the general idea? Let's get into the details.

Open House Round

The vibe: Casual, cute, and put-together.
The essentials: A sundress, skort or shorts + a cute top.
The finishing touches: Comfy sneakers or sandals + simple accessories

Open house is usually your first day (or first couple of days) of recruitment. You'll be meeting lots of chapters in quick rotations, which means plenty of introductions, plenty of walking, and probably a lot of names to remember.

Think of something you might wear to brunch or to grab coffee with friends when you actually want to look cute. A casual sundress, skort with a simple top, or nice shorts with a tank or blouse can all work.

Keep accessories fairly simple, but don't be afraid to add pieces that feel like you. Fun earrings, your favorite necklace, or a cute bag can give a simple outfit a little more personality.

Most importantly, don't feel like you need to go all-out on day one. There are dressier rounds coming!

Philanthropy Round

The vibe: Polished, but still relaxed.
The essentials
: A casual dress, midi skirt + top, matching set, or tailored shorts/pants.
The finishing touches: Comfortable sandals, flats, or a low heel + lightweight fabrics for hot days.

Next up is philanthropy, when chapters share more about the organizations and causes they support.

The dress code usually steps up slightly from open house, but we're still nowhere near preference-night territory.

A casual dress, midi skirt with a cute top, tailored shorts, or lightweight pants are all easy options. A matching set can also be a fun choice if that's more your style.

You'll probably still be moving between houses, so keep comfort in mind when choosing your shoes. Nice sandals, flats, clean sneakers, wedges, or a low block heel can all work depending on your campus.

If recruitment happens somewhere hot (hello, August in the South!), this is also the time to be realistic about fabric. Cotton, linen blends, and other lightweight materials can make a long day of house visits much more comfortable.

And don't feel like you need to stick to a specific recruitment color palette. Neutrals, pastels, bright colors, and prints are all fair game. If you love it and it works with your campus dress guidance, go for it!

Sisterhood Round

The vibe: Dressy casual with plenty of room for personal style.
The essentials: A mini or midi dress, jumpsuit, elevated matching set, or skirt + top.
The finishing touches: Statement accessories + shoes you can still comfortably walk in.

By sisterhood round, your list of chapters has gotten shorter, and your conversations will usually start getting a little deeper.

You'll hear more about what it's actually like to be part of each chapter, and your outfit can step up a little too!

A midi or mini dress, jumpsuit, skirt-and-top combo, or elevated matching set all work well here. This is a great round to have a little more fun with your outfit and wear something that feels very you.

Love bold colors? Wear one. Always reaching for a floral mini dress? Perfect. More of a neutral matching-set girl? That works too.

Accessories can come out to play a little more here as well. Add statement earrings, layer a few necklaces, or grab the bag you've been waiting all week to wear.

The main thing is to pick something you can forget about once you walk through the door. Sisterhood round is about getting to know the chapters you're seriously considering, not spending every conversation wondering if your bra strap is falling down.

Preference Round

The vibe: Elevated and a little more formal.
The essentials: A dress, elevated jumpsuit, sleek matching set, or tailored separates.
The finishing touches: Dressier shoes + your favorite jewelry, hair, and makeup.

Preference, or "pref," is usually the final and most formal round of recruitment.

You'll typically visit just a few chapters, and the atmosphere tends to be much more intimate than earlier in the week. Chapters may share meaningful traditions, stories, or what their sisterhood means to them, and you'll have some of your most important conversations before submitting your final rankings.

This is the time to pull out the dress you've been saving, an elevated jumpsuit, a sleek matching set, or tailored separates. Preference night attire often leans toward dresses, but that absolutely doesn't mean you have to wear one.

You can also step up your accessories, hair, or makeup if you want to. Maybe that's your favorite pair of statement earrings and soft curls, or maybe it's the exact same makeup you've worn all week because you know you love it.

Heels are common, but they're definitely not mandatory. A block heel, dressy sandal, ballet flat, or another shoe you can comfortably walk and stand in is completely fine.

This is one of those nights when you'll be much happier wearing something you genuinely feel good in than an outfit you picked because you thought it looked like a "pref dress."

Bid Day

The vibe: Comfortable, casual, and ready to celebrate!
The essentials: Denim shorts, a skirt, or comfy bottoms + a simple tank or tee.
The finishing touches: Sneakers or other comfy shoes you can actually run, dance, and celebrate in.

You made it!

Bid Day is when you find out which chapter you've matched with, meet your new sisters, and take approximately one million photos (fact!). After a week of planning outfits for different dress codes, this is your chance to have some fun.

Many chapters provide Bid Day shirts or another piece of matching merch for their new members. If that's how your campus does things, you'll want to wear something simple that works with whatever you're given.

Denim shorts, a skirt, or comfy bottoms with a simple tank or tee are all easy choices.

Depending on your campus, you may change into your chapter's Bid Day look once you arrive. If you aren't given a shirt or outfit straight away, a matching set, cute top with shorts, casual dress, or another fun daytime outfit works perfectly.

One thing we wouldn't compromise on? Comfortable shoes. There may be running, jumping, dancing, hugging, and plenty of standing around for photos. Wear something you can actually move in.

What Not to Wear to Sorority Recruitment

There's no secret list of clothes that will ruin your chances of getting a bid. Seriously. Instead of worrying about arbitrary fashion rules, focus on avoiding things that are going to make an already busy week harder than it needs to be.

That means thinking twice about:
Shoes you can't comfortably walk in. Even the cutest heels stop being cute when you've been standing in them for six hours.
Clothes you constantly have to adjust. If you're already pulling up the neckline or fixing the straps at home, imagine doing it through back-to-back conversations (no fun).
Anything that goes against your campus guidance. Your school's Panhellenic recommendations should always come first.
An outfit you've never actually worn. Recruitment week isn't the ideal time to discover that your new dress rides up when you walk.
Anything that doesn't feel like you. You don't have to transform into your idea of a "sorority girl" for recruitment. Pick clothes you genuinely like wearing and that don't make you feel like you're playing a part.

In other words, what not to wear to sorority recruitment has much less to do with specific colors, trends, or silhouettes and much more to do with choosing clothes that won't distract you from the actual experience.

A Few Final Tips for Planning Your Recruitment Outfits

Once you have a rough idea of what you're wearing each day, a little prep can save you a lot of 6 AM closet panic.

Here are a few final tips to consider before you lock in your outfits for the week.

Check Your Campus Guidance We can't stress this one enough. Recruitment looks different at every school, and some Panhellenic organizations provide very specific examples of what PNMs should wear to each round.

Use those recommendations as your starting point, then put your own spin on them.

Plan Your Outfits Before Recruitment Starts

Lay out your clothes, shoes, accessories, and anything else you need before the first day. Even better, try each full outfit on.

You'll quickly discover if the shoes don't actually work with the dress or if that top needs a different bra before you're trying to leave the house.

It's also worth having a backup outfit or two ready. Spills happen, weather changes, and sometimes the outfit you loved on Sunday just isn't hitting the same on Thursday morning.

Dress for the Weather

Dress for the Weather If you're rushing in August, you could be spending a lot of time outside in serious heat. That means you'll definitely want to prioritize lightweight fabrics, comfortable shoes, and hairstyles that can handle the humidity.

If rain is in the forecast, throw an umbrella and a backup pair of shoes in your recruitment bag if you're allowed to carry one. And for cooler campuses (or those houses where the AC is always on full blast), have a cardigan or light jacket that works with a few different outfits.

Yes, looking and feeling cute is important. But not melting between houses is also pretty important, too.

Give New Shoes a Test Run

If you bought shoes specifically for recruitment, make sure to wear them around your house first.

Better yet, take them for a proper walk. Finding out that your adorable new sandals give you blisters is much less devastating three days before recruitment than three houses into open house.

Bring a Few Emergency Essentials

Check what your campus allows you to carry during recruitment, but if you can bring a small bag, a few basics can be lifesavers.

Think hair ties, blotting papers, lip balm, mints, blister patches, and a portable charger. You don't need to bring your entire bathroom cabinet, just the things you'll actually be glad to have after a few hours on campus.

The Most Important Recruitment Outfit Rule? Feel Like Yourself

It's easy to spend way too much time thinking about what to wear to sorority recruitment, especially when your feed is suddenly full of perfectly styled rush-week outfits.

However, your clothes aren't the part of recruitment that chapters are going to remember most. In fact, the National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) reminds everyone going through recruitment that their clothes don't define them. Chapters are much more interested in getting to know you, the person wearing them.

So try to pick outfits that not only suit the dress code and feel like you, but also let you focus on the people you're meeting instead of what you're wearing. And if you can walk into a house and stop thinking about your outfit once the conversation starts, you've probably picked a pretty good one!

Frequently Asked Questions About What to Wear to Sorority Recruitment

What should I wear to sorority recruitment?

It depends on the round and your campus dress guidance. In general, recruitment starts fairly casual and gets dressier as the week goes on. You might wear a sundress or cute top and shorts for open house, step things up for philanthropy and sisterhood, and choose a more elevated outfit for preference.

What should I wear on the first day of sorority recruitment?

The first round is usually fairly casual. Depending on your school, a sundress, skort and cute top, or nice shorts and a blouse or tank can all work. Comfortable shoes are also a must since you'll probably be doing plenty of walking.

What is the dress code for sorority recruitment?

There isn't one universal sorority recruitment dress code. Every campus does things a little differently, so check the guidance from your school's Panhellenic organization first before planning your outfits.

Can I wear jeans to sorority recruitment?

It depends on your campus and the round. Jeans may be completely appropriate at schools with a more casual open house, while other campuses may recommend dresses, skirts, or shorts instead. If your Panhellenic organization provides outfit examples, use those as your guide.

What should I avoid wearing during sorority recruitment?

Avoid anything that conflicts with your campus dress guidance or makes you uncomfortable.

For example, shoes that hurt, clothes you have to keep adjusting, and brand-new pieces you haven't test-driven can all become annoying during a long recruitment day. Beyond that, don't get too caught up in lists of supposed fashion "don'ts." The goal is to look appropriate for the round while still feeling like yourself.
