A week long event that benefits an amazing cause AND is a ton of fun?? Count us in! Kappa Delta at Texas A&M University recently threw their annual Shamrock Week, raising money for their local and national philanthropy. I got the pleasure to talk with their VP of Events and Programming, Yara Karam, about how her and her team pulled off such a successful philanthropy event!
Together, they were able to raise $59,340!! That in itself is truly insane. 80% of that impressive amount goes to thier local philanthropy, the Prenatal Clinic of Bryan, while the rest went to the their national cause, Prevent Child Abuse America. They could not have reached this major milestone without the help from the College Station community and Texas A&M students who attended events throughout the week.

Shamrock Week
Most Kappa Delta chapters around the country hold an annual Shamrock Week for their main philanthropy event, and the Eta Alpha chapter is no different. They had mutliple events throughout the week of February 28, ending with a bang at their Spaghetti dinner - but more on that later. How else do they raise money Monday-Thursday?
Excellent question. Yara gave me the full rundown on what her committee came up with to raise the most money possible. They started the lucky week off with a profit share at Sweet Eugene's, an local fav coffee shop in College Station. Girls hung out at the coffeehouse all day, starting the week off right. A percentage of purchases that day went to KD, giving the chapter an energetic start to the week. Because what college student doesn't love coffee??
The next day, Kay Dee catered towards the sorority girls with a Kendra Scott shopping event. This was also a profit share, but was held at the KD house, at the local Kendra Scott location, and online for two days! Girls were able to buy cute jewelry for themselves, their moms, not to mention all while supporting such an amazing cause!
That brings us to Wednesday - a Torchy's Tacos profit share! If you haven't had the queso from Torchy's, you're truly missing out. The restaurant has amazingg food, so you know that the dinnertime event brought in a ton of money for PCAA and the Prenatal Clinic of Bryan. Yara said they had a line out the door the entire night, allowing for the big/little fams to hang out with one another while enjoying yummy food!
Speaking of the Prental clinic - Thursday's event! Kappa Delta at Texas A&M University held a supplies drive for the local clinic, getting an overwhelming amount of items for the local philanthropy. Yara was able to pack her car completely full, having goods spilling out when they delivered everything. The clinic was incredibly grateful for this giant donation, allowing the members of KD to see their hard work make a difference in real time! Since COVID, the chapter has not been able to visit their local philanthropy. Thankfully however, with cases dropping, the girls are going to able to start up volunteer hours and tours at the clinic again! YAY!!

With all the profit shares complete, that brings us to the end of Shamrock Week - Spaghetti Dinner! For the past 14 years, Eta Alpha has thrown the huge event, raising more and more money for their philanthropies. It might be called spaghetti dinner, but that's just the tip of the iceberg. Over 2,000 people attended this event, and that fact alone was enough to blow us away. It is SO inspiring to hear about college kids and their local community coming together to support KD.
So what was on the agenda? First - food! There was spaghetti (obviously,) as well as breadsticks, salad, and cookies. Insomnia cookies donated 1500 cookies for the event (an impressive amount) but the chapter quickly ran out with how many people came that night. No worries, though, always have back up cookies on hand!
Besides the delicious food, Kappa Delta also had two bands perform outside, keeping the vibes perfect while people hung out and ate. They needed it too - with people spilling out onto the parking lot and their hill at the back of the house. That's how many people attended this thing! Insane!! Yara said it was a blast, though, with peoples' families and friends coming in for the night. There was a line out the door all night, the sign of success for any event.
