    AOII at ULM: Strikeout Arthritis

    • 5 min read

We love making shirts for a great sorority, especially when it's for a cause! We got to work with Alpha Omicron Pi at the University of Louisiana Monroe recently for their Strike Out Arthritis event, and can't help but brag on such a great chapter. Laken Neal, the chapter's philanthropy chair, gave all the details about their recent event and how the entire chapter got involved!

AOII at ULM holds a Strike Out event every year for their national philanthropy, the Arthritis Foundation. In the past, they've had Striking Out Arthritis, a bowling spin on AOII's classic philanthropy event, as well as a chili fest. Because of COVID, however, they haven't been able to invite other organizations and clubs to be a part of the event. Not this year, though! Laken walked me how they worked to make this event a success, and how the whole campus got to join in!

    Strike Out

Working off the theme of "Strike," Alpha Omicron Pi at the University of Louisiana Monroe hosted a kickball tournament for their annual Spring event. Using their school's intramural fields, they were able to host multiple games for men's, women's, and co-edtournament brackets. This event wasn't just for Greek organizations, though. Anyone from ULM was allowed to participate, whether they were in a sorority/fraternity or not! Different clubs, organizations, and sports teams came out to support the cause. AOII themselves got to make a co-ed team with the school's tennis team, joining in on all the fun! Other sisters worked the event, letting everyone participate!

In the end, Kappa Sigma, Kappa Delta, and ULM BCM were the champs in each bracket. For each winning team, AOII had shirts made for the winners to show off their victory. As Laken described, people get plaques or trophies for things like this all the time. It's wayyy more fun to be able to rep your win around campus, and who doesn't love a free t-shirt??

    Giving Back

A kickball tournament brings the fun, but it's also for a good cause! The proceeds from Strike Out went 100% to the Arthritis Foundation, AOII's national philanthropy. Strike Out is the main philanthropy for AOII chapters across the country, bringing in a TON of money for arthritis research. AOII at ULM really hit it out of the park (apologies for the cheesy pun) with their lofty fundraising goal. They challenged each member to raise $150, whether from selling tickets or getting local businesses to sponsor the event. This way, they were able to support small businesses by putting them on the back of their shirts. Some sisters had their family's company sponsor, making it even sweeter!

If you think they've already done it all, they haven't. Alpha Omicron Pi at ULM also supports their local philanthropy, the West Monroe Community Center. Though they don't need any monetary support, they do need hands to help out! These girls hang out with 50+ kids for an after school program, helping them with homework and giving food out. Laken talked about how much her chapter loves making an impact directly in their community, and how much they they have! They've recently gone for a St. Patrick's Dayparty, and plan to visit again for Easter to dye eggs.

Laken talked about how much time and work went into making this event a success, and it has been so great to see how much it paid off! What an incredible philanthropy to kick off the post-COVID events, all while raising a ton of money for the Arthritis Foundation. Laken, thank you so much for talking with me about Strike Out - I hope y'all had a great time!! Alpha Omicron Pi at the University of Louisiana Monroe, thanks for letting us make your shirts! Maybe we're biased, but we think they look AMAZING :)
